During this conference, different stakeholders will exchange their ideas about how Artificial intelligence is transforming supervision and risk management within the financial sector.

After opening remarks by NBB director Tom Dechaene, the NBB (Brigitte Vandevelde and Maxime-Edouard Laloire) and the FSMA (Karel De Bondt) will share an update on where they stand in terms of SupTech.

Professor Hans Degryse, from KU Leuven, will give academic insights on how the use of SupTech could affect the banking sector. 

Jermy Prenio from the BIS will discuss the factors that could contribute to the adoption of SupTech tools in the supervisory processes.

With Isabelle Meau from the NBB as moderator, Raf Geens from KBC Group, Jacques Theys from Euroclear, Ioana Karger from the ECB and Wijnand Nuyts from DNB will share their views in a panel discussion on the benefits and challenges of integrating AI in financial supervision and risk management within financial institutions.  

The conference will be held in English and no translation will be provided.

Q&A session will be foreseen for different sessions.

A sandwich lunch will be provided.

    Ioana Karger is a Team Lead in the Supervisory Technologies section of the ECB. Since her start in the SupTech team in 2021, she has been driving innovation initiatives with a focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP), including the Athena tool providing textual analysis and LLM capabilities to SSM supervisors. In her current role, she is overseeing strategic initiatives such as Olympus, an ambitious programme to modernise and consolidate the SSM IT landscape. Before joining SupTech, she has worked in different functions of horizontal and direct supervision in the ECB since 2016.

    She has a broad financial sector experience, having previously worked in a Private Banking & Asset Management Institution and in Risk Management & Strategy Consulting. Ioana holds an MSc in International Economics and Economic Policy from Goethe University Frankfurt and Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Clark University Worcester USA and in International Relations from the Academy of Economic Studies Bucharest.

    Jermy joined the Financial Stability Institute of the BIS in 2016. He is involved in managing the FSI's outreach programme for financial supervisors. He contributes to the FSI's published work, mainly on technology-related topics such as fintech, suptech and cyber security, and develops other policy-related material for FSI Connect. He also manages the activities of the Informal Suptech Network and coordinates the FSI's work related to financial inclusion. Previously, he was Deputy Director for Regulatory Affairs at the Institute of International Finance in Washington DC, where he led the formulation of the global banking industry's views on international regulatory issues. He also worked as a regulator in the Philippines, where he headed the Task Force on Basel II Implementation.
